The ASEAN Charter serves as a firm foundation in achieving the ASEAN Community by providing legal status and institutional framework for ASEAN. It also codifies ASEAN norms, rules and values; sets clear targets for ASEAN; and presents accountability and compliance.
This lesson gives a very basic overview of the ASEAN Charter and the structure of the ASEAN Communities. This will get you familiar with disaster management architecture to be discussed during the class.
Read the ASEAN Charter, particularly pages 5-13. Reflect on the following:
- What are purposes of ASEAN?
- What are the principles of ASEAN that you do not understand?
- What does it mean for your country to be part of ASEAN?
